About Tsavo National Park

Kenya’s largest wilderness, in two parks

Tsavo was established in 1948 and, at over 22,000 square kilometres, is Kenya’s largest protected area. The Nairobi to Mombasa highway and railway split it into two parks: Tsavo East, with its vast open plains, the Galana River and the Yatta Plateau, one of the world’s longest lava flows, and Tsavo West, with volcanic hills, Mzima Springs and the Shetani Lava Flow.

The red soil gives Tsavo’s elephants their famous rusty colour. The park is also home to maneless lions, leopards, cheetahs, buffaloes, black rhinos in the Ngulia Rhino Sanctuary, rare antelopes like the lesser kudu and fringe-eared oryx, and over 500 bird species.

Park Location

Tsavo lies in southeastern Kenya, about 240 km from Nairobi at Mtito Andei Gate, spreading across Taita Taveta, Makueni, Kitui and Tana River counties. The Nairobi to Mombasa highway and railway separate Tsavo East from Tsavo West.

Getting There by Road

Drive southeast from Nairobi on Mombasa Road (A109). Mtito Andei Gate, for Tsavo West and the north of Tsavo East, is about 4 to 5 hours away. Voi Gate, for Tsavo East, is about 5 to 6 hours. You can also take the SGR train to Mtito Andei or Voi station, where we’ll meet you.

Getting There by Air

Scheduled and charter flights from Wilson Airport in Nairobi serve airstrips across Tsavo, including Kilaguni and Finch Hattons in Tsavo West and Satao in Tsavo East. Flights take about 1 hour, and lodges arrange airstrip transfers.
