About Amboseli National Park

Elephants, swamps and the shadow of Kilimanjaro

Amboseli became a national park in 1974 and covers about 392 square kilometres in Kajiado County, southern Kenya, right on the Tanzanian border. It lies at the foot of Mount Kilimanjaro, at roughly 1,100 to 1,200 metres above sea level, and is a UNESCO Biosphere Reserve.

The landscape is a striking mix of dusty plains, a seasonal dry lake bed that shimmers with mirages, acacia woodland and green swamps fed by underground springs from Kilimanjaro’s melting snow and ice.

The swamps draw elephants, buffaloes and hippos all year round. Amboseli’s elephants are among the most studied in the world, and you can also see lions, cheetahs, giraffes, zebras, wildebeest and over 400 bird species.
