About Hell’s Gate National Park

A Volcanic Legacy Steeped in Mystery and Majesty

Hell’s Gate National Park was established in 1984 and lies about 90 km northwest of Nairobi, just south of Lake Naivasha. It covers about 68 square kilometres and sits between roughly 1,550 and 2,190 metres above sea level.

The park takes its name from the narrow break in the cliffs and the geothermal activity in the area. Volcanic eruptions millions of years ago shaped its towering red cliffs, rock towers and steaming vents, and explorers who passed through in the 1880s named it Hell’s Gate.

Today, the same heat powers the nearby Olkaria geothermal plants, one of the largest geothermal developments in Africa, while zebras, giraffes and buffaloes graze on the plains below.

Park Location

Hell’s Gate National Park is near Naivasha in Nakuru County, about 90 km northwest of Nairobi, roughly a 1.5 to 2-hour drive from the city.

Getting There by Road

Take the Nairobi to Nakuru highway (A104) and drop down into the Rift Valley towards Naivasha. From Naivasha town, follow Moi South Lake Road to the park’s Elsa Gate.

Getting There by Air

Light aircraft can fly from Wilson Airport in Nairobi to private airstrips around Naivasha by charter, followed by a short drive to the park. For most visitors, the road is quicker and more affordable.
